Immediate Need: Edukit Coordinator

Smith Volunteers! There is an immediate need for an Edukit Coordinator (school supply kits)! Our current PTSA lead, Kendra fulfilled this role for 7 years and is ready to move on now. She is happy to train any volunteers so they are ready to go for this year.

Volunteer Responsibilities:  As the parent coordinator for the EduKit school supply program, your responsibility is to be the liaison between parents/teachers at Smith and our EduKit program representative. This includes-

  • emailing the teachers to update the school supply lists (by grade) ahead of the next school year,
  • submitting the lists to the EduKit rep to lock down pricing so the rep can publish on the EduKit ordering website,
  • promoting EduKit with parents at Smith,
  • coordinating with the rep for delivering of the kits to Smith in late Aug ahead of the first day of school,
  • physically being on campus at Smith the day of delivery to count kits and bring to each grade level "pod" so they are available for students the first day of school.
  • And lastly, the role involves communication with teachers and parents the first two weeks of school in case there are any questions about missing EduKits, return requests, etc.

Estimated Time Commitment:  Approximately 8-10 hours spread over the year. Most of this is emailing with teachers and the EduKit rep at whatever time is convenient for you. The only set time commitment is ~2 hours the day of delivery at the end of August to physically count the kits to confirm receipt.

If you are interested in taking up this role for the upcoming school year or want to know more about it, please email Kendra Goodenough at kendram3@yahoo.com. She will be happy to answer questions and train you for the role.

Math is Cool Competition 2023 - Grade 4, March 29 3-7pm

Please notice another change that we will use the Smith school library for the competition on March 29, 3-7p.m

Students shall use the school laptop (not your personal laptop/device) which has better network access at school. Please have your student check out the school laptop from their classroom teacher the day before the competition, bring it to the competition, and then return back to their classroom teacher the day after the competition. We tested at Smith today that the student laptop has access to the competition link. Please have your student use the school laptop carefully and be able to return it in good condition back to school.

Given that it will be a long competition, please have your student fully charge the student laptop before bringing it to the competition, and bring the power cord (power charger) to the competition.

There are power outlets in the library but not close to the table and chairs. If you may have a power extension cord, please bring it to the competition day as well.

Please visit Math is Cool 2023 for Competition Rules and Details.

For Questions, email Yuan Zhang at volunteeryuan@gmail.com.

Science Olympiad at Smith

Science Olympiad is an international-level competition that strives to provide challenging and motivational events to help students pursue their science interests beyond the classroom. It tests students' knowledge and understanding of biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. This competition gives students exposure to different STEM fields through both hands-on experience and contextual learning. We are trying to gauge the level of interest for this program at Samantha Smith Elementary. Please fill out the interest form below and we will get in touch with you soon. Only Samantha Smith 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be eligible to compete. Email janakilakshmiv@gmail.com with any questions!
